What to Expect During an Evaluation

We understand that the testing process can feel unfamiliar. Here's what you can expect at each stage of the evaluation:

🗓 Step 1: Initial Consultation (30 minutes – free)

Before scheduling an evaluation, we offer a brief phone consultation to understand your concerns, answer your questions, and determine if an assessment is the right next step.

📋 Step 2: Intake Appointment (60–90 minutes)

Each assessment begins with an intake session that involves the child’s caregivers (and sometimes with older children) to review developmental, medical, academic, and behavioral history. This helps us tailor the evaluation to your child’s unique needs.

🧠 Step 3: Testing Sessions (Typically 1–2 days, 6-8 hours total)

The testing itself is typically scheduled over two days, including both morning and afternoon sessions, with a break in between for lunch, to ensure children stay engaged and comfortable. We strongly recommend a comprehensive battery, which may include:

  • Cognitive Testing (IQ/intellectual potential)

  • Academic Achievement (reading, writing, math skills)

  • Executive Function (attention, memory, organization)

  • Developmental Assessment (everyday life skills and adaptive behavior)

  • Emotional and behavioral functioning

📞 Step 4: Gathering Collateral Information (60-90 minutes)

Collaboration with other professionals, such as teachers, therapists, and physicians, is a critical component of the evaluation process. (With caregiver/guardian permission.)

✍️ Step 5: Scoring & Report Writing

Following testing, all data is scored and interpreted. A comprehensive, individualized report is written, including diagnoses (if appropriate), learning profiles, and recommendations for home, school, and treatment planning.

💬 Step 6: Feedback Session

You’ll meet with Dr. Tishey to review the results, ask questions, and walk through all recommendations. A separate feedback session for your child can also be arranged to help them understand the results in an age-appropriate way.
